Ever wondered if you could run around the world (or just to New York)?  Well, instead of standing around the yard waiting for the morning bell, kids (and parents) can walk, run, jog, skip, and hop around the world!

Carthay's Morning Running Club is a daily running club for grades K through 5th that provides a positive and healthy opportunity for our children to develop a daily routine of physical exercise. Regular before school exercise also helps increase attentiveness and behavior in the classroom.

Running Club starts on Monday at 7:55am, and runs daily from 7:55am - 8:10am.  All kids and parents are invited to walk, jog or run around the track. See you there!

Each lap around the track is 1/10th of a mile.  With each lap, kids collect a popsicle stick.  We'll count all of the sticks and track progress by placing footprints on the map!

There are prizes, too!

For more details, and/or if you'd like to help for a few minutes on one or more mornings, check out the attached info-sheet or contact the Running Club Chair Deborah Henderson.

Hello Carthay Families!

Attached you will find supply lists for the upcoming school year by grade level. Please take a moment to review the supply list for your child's grade. With limited resources, it is highly encouraged that parents purchase what they can from the list to ensure their child has the supplemental materials needed in the classroom.

June 6, 2016

Dear Carthay Families:

As we come to the end of the school year, I want to thank you all for sending us such amazing students.  Carthay Environmental Studies Magnet is fortunate to have hard working, fun, and focused students walk in our doors every morning.  Much of the credit for that goes to you and the care, love and high expectations they get from you at home.  We all thank you for your support throughout the year and willingness to work with us as a team to get the most out of your child.

We appreciate the dedication of the PTA members chaired by Tyson Roberts and all the Board Members this past year.  They represent Carthay parents extremely well with their knowledge of policies and astute understanding of issues facing our school.  We encourage you to join the PTA and School Council meetings to share your opinions and have your concerns heard.  Your genuine interest in your child’s education is evident and the students ultimately benefit.  We appreciate and thank all our volunteers for the countless hours involved in so many of the behind the scenes activities such as fundraising, work in the garden, the science fair, and assisting in the classrooms.  We could not offer such a rich education to our students without the continuing effort and support that you all give.

Last day of School

The last day of school is Friday, June 10, 2016. We will be on minimum day schedule on Thursday and Friday, June 9th and June 10th - students will be dismissed at 12:49 pm.

Reading over the Summer is critical to your child’s success!

Reading during the summer makes a critical difference in your child’s success in the fall.  The expectation is that all students read at least six (6) books over the summer, two of them nonfiction.  Carthay’s Reading Challenge invites children to read at least ten books.  Those who do will receive a homework pass from their teacher in the fall.

The research is very clear that books read at home should be EASY!  If your child wants a harder book, read it aloud to him or her.  (Reading aloud to kids of ALL ages is a great tradition that builds vocabulary, comprehension, and is just plain fun!)

Talking with your child about books also improves your child’s reading comprehension.  Possible questions: What has happened so far in the book?  What do you think the character will do next and why? What are you wondering about the book/story now?  What is the problem in the story and how is it getting solved?  Can you retell the basic story/facts about the book?  In fact the more you engage your child in meaningful conversation in general, the more he or she will improve his/her thinking.

Carthay’s Summer Office Hours

The school office will be open through June 28th and will reopen July 21st.  The best way to reach me during the summer is via email or by calling the school when the office reopens.

The official Ribbon Cutting for our Outdoor Classroom, financed by an LAUSD Community School Park program, was held at the Outdoor Classroom on Friday at 10am, March 18. See LAUSD Press Release HERE.

The Outdoor Classroom will enable students to learn some of their Garden Science lessons in a natural environment, with a seating area as well as a variety of learning opportunities such as a bioswale (which filters rainwater and distributes it into the water table rather than flushing the water directly into the ocean) and a weather station (not yet installed).

The Outdoor Classroom will also be available for seating and community events as part of the Carthay Sunday Playground. The Carthay Sunday Playground is open every Sunday from 11am-4pm.

Not only does Carthay teach science, it is also involved in expanding the realm of scientific knowledge.

A new insect identified for the first time and discovered in Carthay's garden as part of the NHM BioSCAN project was named after Carthay!

Carthay School of Environmental Studies Magnet is the only school participating in the Natural History Museum's BioSCAN project.

Carthay has done many science fairs in the past, but with the school becoming an environmental studies magnet, the new tradition is an annual Science Fair and Environmental Expo! And our first was a huge success.

The Science Fair was held on May 22nd in the auditorium, with science projects presented by every class, as well as some individual projects. All of the projects were wonderful, but the judges did have to make a decision.

And the winners are...

  • 1st Place: Ms. O'Brien's 3rd Grade Class, "Shower vs. Tub Experiment: Which Saves More Water?
  • 2nd Place: Ms. Eisenstein's 2nd Grade Class, "Lifecycle of a Frog."
  • 3rd Place: Ms. Arutyunyan's 1st Grade Class, "Hanging by a Thread;" and Ms. Yanikian-Sutton's 4th Grade Class, "How do We Impact the Environment?"

Honorable Mentions:

  • Mr. Vinluan's Pre-K Class, "Sea Animals"
  • Ms. Ruiz's Kindergarten Class, "What can Seeds Grow in?"

Congratulations again to all our winners and all our participants!

Outside on the yard was the Environmental Exposition! Exhibitors included Heal the Bay (sponsor of the EEI law), the Ballona Wetlands Land Trust, the Natural History Museum with BioSCAN insects from Carthay's Garden, STAR Education's Garden Science, the Theodore Payne Society, Grades of Green, California Fuel Cell Partnership with a Fuel Cell-powered SUV, and many more!

See the Flyer for more details.

Special thanks to Jonathan Armstrong for all of his hard work organizing the Fair & Expo! Thanks as well to all of the teachers, staff, parents, and exhibitors who contributed to the event's success.
