PRincipal's Message, Fall 2022

Dear Carthay Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to the 2022-2023 school year! I am thrilled to be welcoming your children back to school on August 15, 2022.

It is with great excitement to welcome you to the 2022 - 2023 school year.  I hope everyone had a relaxing and restful summer vacation with family, friends, and loved ones.  The last two school years have been full of uncertainty and change due to the COVID-19 pandemic. I am so grateful for the flexibility, caring, and patience of our parents and staff, who worked together to creatively support our students. We have learned to be flexible, patient, and resilient.  As we move forward into "normalcy", we will spend the upcoming year focusing on academic, social, and emotional recovery.

Strong family engagement has always been a critical part of student success at Carthay Environmental Studies STEM Magnet. Parents are a child’s first teachers and important role models. Every parent can help their child to be prepared and responsible in school, regardless of their educational background and the language they speak. Opportunities to connect include email, Facebook, Twitter, and Remind, along with attending school events as much as possible.

We encourage each of you to be involved in your child's education by building connections with our teachers, participating in the PTA (Parent Teacher Association) and SSC (School Site Council).

Please be sure to read the weekly teacher’s updates that will be sent home to you via Schoology or the weekly homework folders (K- 2). This will always contain the most up-to-date information about upcoming events and important reminders. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me or your child’s teacher at any time with questions, concerns, and suggestions. It is also important to stay informed about what your child is learning. Your child’s teacher will keep you updated, but you can reach out to share if you notice your child struggling with the content or to discuss strategies for practicing at home. Another important way in which you can support your children is through encouraging good attendance. Students should be at school on time every day and avoid missing school as much as possible.

This year we will continue to teach our students to Be SafeBe Kind, and Be Responsible in all areas at school. We are placing a greater emphasis on building students' character, along with their academics.  Each month we will have a character trait that we focus on, and our classroom bulletin boards will show reminders of how we can demonstrate good character. We will focus on the idea that we are "Better Together" in all areas of life, supporting and caring for each other and enjoying our community.

I am excited to see the academic, social, and intrapersonal progress our students will make during the 22-23 school year. Thank you for your very important part in Carthay’s learning community.

I’m looking forward to another wonderful school year!
